How To Be Your Own Valentine While Saving Money

Falling in Love With Yourself So Someone Else Can Too!

This newsletter is to encourage you to celebrate the holiday in your own way, with or without a significant other. Get out of the box. Be creative. Be silly, cheesy and fun! Don't let expectations and finances--yours or anyone else's--ruin the day for you.

How can you be your own Valentine while saving money ?

Recently I had an interaction with someone who was setting themselves up to have a miserable time on Valentine’s Day.

They had just gotten out of a relationship and appeared to be more invested in having a ‘pity party’ and staying in a depression .

When I suggested to them to be their own Valentine they looked at me like I was crazy.

Some people really invest a lot of negative energy towards this holiday.

All the commercials, out on the town specials all seem geared towards couples and if you don't have a "special someone", Valentine's Day can bring it into sharper focus. If you are in a relationship, the holiday can still be disappointing by all of the expectations surrounding it. Perhaps you feel your partner doesn't plan something special enough, or put much effort into what they got you.

I don’t believe that what you get or what you do is what Valentines Day is all about. I believe it is a day to celebrate love, period. Love is all around and is constantly with you. It does not have to be a romantic love. Celebrate the love of your friends, your family, your pets, nature, books…..etc.

If you are in a relationship , by all means talk about the holiday with your partner. Discuss the expectation and hopes with each other. Agree together on how you will celebrate. Don't expect the other person to read your mind! (Even if one of you is psychic, this expectation almost always falls short!)

If you are not in a relationship, don't give the holiday the power to get you down. Find a way that is fun, or meaningful, or both. Here are some ideas that will cost you little to no money for being your own Valentine.

  • Community Service – Volunteer. Help someone feel less lonely.

  • Think of ways you can express your love for people, animals, or the planet.

  • Think of the day as "Heart Day". Be good to your heart. Eat heart-healthy foods. Do an aerobic exercise you enjoy.

  • Go for a walk. Appreciate the beauty of nature that surrounds you as you are walking. Stop and smell the roses! Smile at people as you walk by!

  • Write down all the things you are grateful for. Read each one and feel the gratitude in your heart and body.

  • Get out your art supplies! Make a Valentine for yourself. Give one to someone whose day could use a lift. Be a “Secret Valentine” to someone. Give out ‘cheezy’ Valentines to all your friends, your favorite clerk at the grocery store, your postal delivery person, etc.

  • Celebrate the fact that chocolate will be marked down on February 15!

  • Take a long bubble bath with music and a good book!

  • Watch a funny movie while wearing your comfy p.j.’s and eating popcorn.

  • Journal in detail about your ‘ideal’ valentine and how you would feel with that person in your life. Then make a plan to bring more of those feelings into your life yourself.

  • Go out to see a ‘chick flick’ with the girls or a ‘shoot ‘em up, bang-bang’ movie with the guys.

  • Throw a Un-Valentine party and have everyone bring food to share.

  • Make your favorite meal (or get take out) and eat it by candle-light on your good dishes.

  • Go to the dollar store and get Valentine’s candy and some wine or margarita glasses. Fill the glasses with the candy and give them to your friends…or if you really want to stretch yourself, give them at random to strangers just because!

  • Go to your local club and dance or karaoke the night away.

  • Whatever you do, HAVE FUN!

Learn to fall in love with yourself and be your own Valentine. When you do this, you will be happier, healthier, smile more and enjoy life more. This is what will attract your ‘ideal’ Valentine and love into your life. If you can’t love you, no one else can love you either. If you already have your partner, you will spark a re-kindle of love!

Valentine blessings and may you awaken to the love that surrounds you every day.
